Englynion (plural of Englyn) are an ancient Welsh verse-form, they are typically composed of any number of short three-line stanzas<\/p>\n
The City<\/p>\n
Yesterday I went to the City,
\nJust over the border –
\nMy mind filled with errands.<\/p>\n
I passed by indifferent –
\nTrod the streets lined with commerce,
\nThe Roman facade hardly noticed.<\/p>\n
But the signs were still present,
\nThe old Walls stretched proudly –
\nForlorn stood the tower of Charles.<\/p>\n
Amongst masonry ancient
\nLay a still silence –
\nPast lives soaked in the ruins.<\/p>\n
Beneath the facade of the street
\nLay old cellars and crypts,
\nEchoing ages long vanished.<\/p>\n
My mind also recalled
\nTales out of sync with the fashions –
\nOf betrayal, strife and conquest.<\/p>\n
Came the Legions to fortify Deva,
\nBuilt bridges and colonnades noble –
\nA brief age of concord and learning.<\/p>\n
Saxons the next tenants came,
\nTo the dismay of the Welsh (latter Britons),
\nDriven over the hills into Cambria.<\/p>\n
Wars, pestilence, strife soon to follow,
\nCivil War least among them
\nDecided the Parliament’s triumph.<\/p>\n
Errands complete I head home,
\nLike the Britons before me –
\nPast glories and discord mere fragments.<\/p>\n

The Welsh name for the city of Chester is ‘Caer’ which simply means ‘City’.
\nDuring the English Civil War (1642-1646) Charles I is said to have watched the crucial defeat of his forces against the Parliamentary army from a tower which still stands on the City Walls.
