{"id":532,"date":"2013-07-06T00:12:10","date_gmt":"2013-07-05T23:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/draigweb.co.uk\/draigweb\/?p=532"},"modified":"2013-07-06T00:12:10","modified_gmt":"2013-07-05T23:12:10","slug":"the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.draigweb.co.uk\/draigweb\/the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"The City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Englynion-style Poems<\/p>\n<p>Englynion (plural of Englyn) are an ancient Welsh verse-form, they are typically composed of any number of short three-line stanzas<\/p>\n<p>The City<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I went to the City,<br \/>\nJust over the border &#8211;<br \/>\nMy mind filled with errands.<\/p>\n<p>I passed by indifferent &#8211;<br \/>\nTrod the streets lined with commerce,<br \/>\nThe Roman facade hardly noticed.<\/p>\n<p>But the signs were still present,<br \/>\nThe old Walls stretched proudly &#8211;<br \/>\nForlorn stood the tower of Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst masonry ancient<br \/>\nLay a still silence &#8211;<br \/>\nPast lives soaked in the ruins.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the facade of the street<br \/>\nLay old cellars and crypts,<br \/>\nEchoing ages long vanished.<\/p>\n<p>My mind also recalled<br \/>\nTales out of sync with the fashions &#8211;<br \/>\nOf betrayal, strife and conquest.<\/p>\n<p>Came the Legions to fortify Deva,<br \/>\nBuilt bridges and colonnades noble &#8211;<br \/>\nA brief age of concord and learning.<\/p>\n<p>Saxons the next tenants came,<br \/>\nTo the dismay of the Welsh (latter Britons),<br \/>\nDriven over the hills into Cambria.<\/p>\n<p>Wars, pestilence, strife soon to follow,<br \/>\nCivil War least among them<br \/>\nDecided the Parliament&#8217;s triumph.<\/p>\n<p>Errands complete I head home,<br \/>\nLike the Britons before me &#8211;<br \/>\nPast glories and discord mere fragments.<\/p>\n<p>Notes.<\/p>\n<p>The Welsh name for the city of Chester is &#8216;Caer&#8217; which simply means &#8216;City&#8217;.<br \/>\nDuring the English Civil War (1642-1646) Charles I is said to have watched the crucial defeat of his forces against the Parliamentary army from a tower which still stands on the City Walls.<br \/>\nDeva &#8211; The Roman settlement and fort at Chester.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Englynion-style Poems Englynion (plural of Englyn) are an ancient Welsh verse-form, they are typically composed of any number of short three-line stanzas The City Yesterday I went to the City, Just over the border &#8211; My mind filled with errands.
