It was the year ‘Almost-Perfection’,
\nman had scaled dizzy heights –
\nconquered Mars, conquered misery.
\nHe could smile at it all;
\nabove all, he could look back with pride
\non a lifetime’s achievement,
\nwith only one hitch –
\na problem central to his condition. <\/p>\n
It made him weep,
\nmade him shudder inside, where lay
\nhis primitive self.
\nHe could not conquer himself.<\/p>\n
The answer presented itself as a matter of logic –
\nwielding the butcher’s mattock – aimed at this general
\ncondition, he would eradicate forever
\nthis dirty great mark, this badge of mystery,
\nthe affliction of Adam.<\/p>\n
To be without that serpent
\nwould decay soul, mind, then both – not living,
\nperhaps not dead, only a shell which into
\nentropy,
\nwould last out
